How Schools Can Invest In 'Service Learning'
As a young mother, Carrie Strohm enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley and earned her degree in mathematics. Then, in her 20s, she returned to school, now working at UC Berkeley, to earn her masters in education. She is the founder and chief executive of newEd, a not-for-profit organization that advocates for college access for students from low-income families. Strohm is also a professor of education policy at UCLA.
Strohm spent a decade in public schools, and she says she discovered that there were only a handful of teachers like her who were willing to teach out of passion and commitment. “I don’t know what it is,” she says. “I believe it is the teacher who is the greatest educator. I believe that is the future of education.”
Allison Janse, a public school teacher in St. Louis, was the first to come to her mind. Strohm began to research what would be needed to achieve that vision.
“I have been to a ton of schools in the past 10 years of this work,” says Strohm. “I think what we learned is that in order to get this work done, it is not enough to just talk about it. It has to be a teacher with dedication.”
In 2007, Strohm and a fellow UC Berkeley alumna launched the Network for College Success (N4CS), a national not-for-profit that supports states and districts committed to “service learning”—that is, incorporating opportunities for students to provide valuable community services into the curriculum. As it expanded its ranks, N4CS commissioned a study to understand the benefits of teaching service learning. The results, released in 2012, underscored the long-term benefits of teachers who specialize in this teaching model.
